Animals for adoption

Common questions

  • What is LoafBase?

A place to find animals at shelters and rescues near you, save the ones you like, and apply to adopt them. The shelter keeps the animal's record and makes the adoption decision.

  • Does it cost anything?

Not to look, save or apply. Adoption fees are paid to the shelter directly. LoafBase never takes payment.

  • Are the shelters verified?

Yes. Only shelters and rescues that LoafBase has verified can list animals here.

Can I ask a shelter something before applying?

Yes. On an animal's page, ask the shelter a question. It sees your first name and last initial, and asking does not start an application. The reply comes to your messages.

  • What happens after I apply?

The shelter reviews your application and may ask you a question or two. If it is a good match, it suggests a visit to meet the animal. You can follow each step on your application's page.

    • Can I apply for more than one animal?

Yes, and shelters expect it. Applying somewhere else does not withdraw an application you already sent.

    • Can I adopt if I rent?

Often yes, with your landlord's consent. A shelter that has filled in its policy shows it on its page, including whether it requires a fenced yard. Not every shelter has.

    • Can I adopt from another province?

It depends on the shelter. A shelter that has filled in its policy says on its page whether it adopts out of province.

    • What do shelters see about me?

Saving an animal tells the shelter nothing about you. When you ask a question, it sees your first name and last initial. When you apply, it gets your name, email, phone, address and your answers. No shelter ever sees your applications to another one.
